T. Carey Wicker, III

Carey Wicker is a natural planner and a strategist.

With those kind of instincts, it is no surprise that Carey always knew that he wanted to be a lawyer. The son of a New Orleans lawyer and judge, Carey knew he wanted to go to law school by the time he was in high school.

Carey graduated from Louisiana Tech University and went on to attend law school at Louisiana State University.

Although Carey now works as a plaintiff attorney who represents victims and the people, he did not start out that way. Carey began his legal career handling insurance defense work. This background provides him with a tremendous amount of perspective in his current position as an attorney. He knows the ins and outs of how insurance companies work, their defense strategies in court, and how to build a strong case in the face of such adversity.

Carey made the change to to work on the plaintiff side of the law because working for the people really resonates with him. He is highly motivated in his work to ensure victims of medical malpractice or personal injury do not suffer in silence. Forming Capitelli & Wicker with Ralph Capitelli gave Carey even more opportunity to devote his practice to victim/survivor representation.

Medical malpractice creates tremendous financial stress for a family, especially if the victim is the primary wage earner. For Carey, nothing is more rewarding than being able to help a family or a person that is struggling as a result of malpractice, a slip and fall, or work place accident. The honor to represent and fight on behalf of a person or family’s rights is what keeps him returning to work every day.

Carey knows that strategy is the key to success. Not every case merits a suit. Medical malpractice is a costly area of law that demands numerous resources. That’s why fewer and fewer lawyers handle medical malpractice. It is also why so many lawyers refer cases to Carey.

When Carey takes a case he alway prepares for the long-game: that the case could go to trial. This means he takes the time to understand the medicine behind the case, undertake document discovery, and find the best expert witnesses. He has the nuts and bolts all lined out so that he is ready for any scenario.

Over time, Carey has cultivated a vast network of reliable experts to call upon should a medical malpractice case go to trial. Quality expert witnesses do not agree to work with just any lawyers. Experts have to have trust in the lawyer, confidence in their ability, and be willing to speak before a judge. Carey has spent the time and care to develop trusting relationships with expert witnesses who can provide such important support for a case.

Carey is active in the legal community even outside of his law practice. He is a guest lecturer at the advanced torts class at Tulane University Law School on the subject of medical malpractice. He also serves annually as a guest lecturer on medical negligence with the Continuing Legal Education of Louisiana Group which has numerous Judges from throughout the state of Louisiana as attendees and speakers.

Outside of practicing law, Carey sits on the board of the Sugar Bowl committee, having served as president in the past. He is also an emeritus member of the board at the Stuart Hall School for Boys.
